If you are expecting a baby in Washington DC any time soon, you are probably making a lot of important decisions right now. One of the decisions that you might not have considered yet is whether or not to hire someone to assist before, during, and after the birth of your baby. Finding a doula in Washington DC is not as difficult as you may initially think. When looking for a birth assistant, the first thing is that the parents and doula should be compatible. This doesn't necessarily mean that parents and their doulas need to be best friends, but keep in mind that the person you select to assist you will be there to empower you during one of the most intimate moments of your life. In order to do that he or she should be able to fulfill your needs with the right amount of vigor to get the job done without overpowering you. A doula is not the same as a doctor or midwife. They typically have little or no medical training and are only there for physical and emotional support. Even if you have a partner to assist you during childbirth, a doula may still be helpful in alleviating your partner's stress and doing all the "work" so that your partner can focus on you and on the birth of your child. If you are considering a drug-free birth, doulas are excellent for pain management. They can also pose as your personal advocate to ensure that you get the birth you want. Resisting medical intervention can be hard when you are in such a vulnerable position, but doulas will typically be more inclined to stick to your birth plan and make sure that the doctors and/or midwives do too. They are also helpful in the postnatal period for breastfeeding advice and new parent support. Some will even help with housework and errands if necessary.
