It doesn't matter if you're starting your first business online, or if you are creating an internet marketing campaign. The bottom line is that once you make the decision to do either one, you have to start with doing your keyword research. If you don't, your readers and customers will never be able to find you. I've seen this many times online. The business owner has a really great site with lots of good content. He/she has created a list to collect email addresses and build relationships with the reader. Everything that business owner needs in order to succeed online is there except for one thing: traffic. Without traffic, especially targeted traffic, your business is dead. It gets worse. Then that business owner makes the next critical mistake: keyword research. He/she doesn't do any or chooses keywords that no one is looking for. If you want to improve your rankings in the search engines, get more targeted traffic, and make more money from your websites without any extra effort, then you need to do keyword research. You also need to find the right keywords to promote your business. With the right keywords, you can determine who your competition is and defeat them in the search engines. Your first step in doing keyword research is to write down several phrases related to what your websites are about (It's best to do this process before you build your websites. Most people don't so you need to do this now.) For example, if you are building a website on a topic related to health, you can start by writing down words like: health health insurance health care mens health This is where you write down really general keywords, usually one and two word keyword phrases. Use these phrases to do your initial search. You will want to use keyword research tools to help you find more keywords. This will help you zero in on those two word keyword phrases that you need to find the right keywords. (There are plenty of free keyword research tools out there. Just do a search in the search engines.) Then you use these words to find what's called "long tail keywords." A long tail keyword is a more targeted phrase that receives less searches, but it's better for driving traffic to your website. Once you find these long tail keyword phrases, then you can use these keywords to write articles, reviews and other content for your websites. You can also use these words to optimize your websites for the search engines. The "secret to getting the right keywords here is to keep repeating this process until you find words that have a lot of searches but not a lot of competition. This is not as easy as it sounds, but it's well worth the effort.
