Conditions of the eye are fairly common. That's why so many people wear contacts or eyeglasses in order to see correctly. Optometrists and ophthalmologists are doctors trained in treating and diagnosing conditions of the eye. If you trouble seeing correctly, make an appointment with an optometrist to receive a diagnosis. Two of the most common eye conditions are called myopia and hyperopia. If these two words don't sound familiar, it's because you probably know them by the names farsightedness and nearsightedness. Myopia is the condition more familiarly known as nearsightedness. The reason for this nickname is that people with myopia often have a hard time seeing things that are far away. They may appear fuzzy and out of focus, while things that are near are clear and in focus. This may cause the person suffering from myopia to squint frequently in an effort to see far away objects. This inability to see things that are far away is a result of the physical length of the eye having a greater length than the optical length. The problem often first emerges in school age children and can get worse during growth years. Fortunately it can be treated with contacts, eyeglasses, or refractive surgery. Hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, is the opposite of myopia. Instead of seeing things that are close, a person with hyperopia is able to see things far away while close objects may appear blurred and fuzzy. This may be caused by an eyeball that is too small or that has weak focusing power. With the help of an optometrist, both of these conditions can be treated.
