A general contractor is responsible for all of the materials, equipment, and labor that goes into constructing a building. As complicated as that sounds, and is, in most places general contractors don't need a certain education to begin contracting. While formal education isn't necessary, general contractors still need to find contractor information wherever they can find it. Most contractors start as construction workers, and gain much of their knowledge through experience. Working as a construction worker, you can learn about framing, plumbing, and carpentry. While a contractor doesn't generally do any of the actual construction themselves, they need to stay familiar with the various construction procedures in order to efficiently manage labor. While not required, most contractors obtain a 4 year Bachelor's degree before starting their contracting career. This degree can be in anything from building science to business management. Utah and Florida don't require a degree, but they do require contractors to attend classes regularly. The internet is a great place to find contractor information, or any kind of information. A contractor has to be familiar with and organize a lot of projects, but every one of those projects can be found online along with a detailed explanation. Some contractors have even taken up blogging, sharing their tips, tricks, and general knowledge with all who will listen. As a contractor, information is your best friend. So long as you have all the information you need, and that information is easy to find, you can make all the decisions necessary to make a construction project run smoothly.
