Packing up for a long distance move is always challenging because everything must be carefully packed to make it through a long transit in one piece. Some items around the house are bigger challenges to pack than others. Artwork is often difficult to pack because it can be hard to find boxes that are the right size and sturdy enough. If you pick up your boxes for free at local stores, it may still be worth it to buy boxes that are specially designed for packing up artwork. Here are a few tips. Get your artwork boxes ready by filling the bottom of the box with crumpled butcher paper. Some people like to use newspaper. But if you choose to go that route you need to be aware that newspaper ink never fully dries and it may rub off on artwork. Butcher paper or bubble wrap is a better choice for artwork. If your artwork is framed with a glass cover, get two long pieces of masking tape and create a large X on the front of the glass. If the glass is broken, this will keep it from shattering into thousands of dangerous pieces. Now cover the framed painting with bubble wrap or butcher paper, tape it closed, and place it carefully in the box. If packing multiple paintings, fill the empty spaces in the box with wadded up butcher paper. When packing paintings that are just unframed canvas, wrap them with several layers of bubble wrap to avoid puncturing. With a little care, your paintings will make it to your new destination unharmed.
