The heating and cooling systems in your home take up as much as 50% of your energy costs annually. This is one reason why many homeowners are looking for ways to cut energy costs and create a more energy efficient home. Fortunately, there are many solutions to the problem and many easy changes that homeowners can make to reduce their energy bills. If you feel like your home is functioning inefficiently, here are a few changes you can make. First, the best solution is also the priciest. If you're living in an older home with outdated heating and air condition systems, perhaps it's time to look at updating. Though you may end up paying a large amount up front, the savings in the end may be worth the switch. New energy efficient machines use much less energy than older models. But if you can't afford the big switch at the moment, there are small changes you can make. Start by creating a regular schedule for changing the filter in your HVAC system. Filters that become clogged and dirty force the unit to work extra hard to pump in clean air. You can avoid this by changing the filter about every three months, if necessary. Another great way to improve your home's energy efficiency is to keep your thermostat set on a consistent program. Constantly turning your thermostat up and down causes it to work harder than if it's set to a consistent program. It can also help to program it to temperature levels that use less energy when you're not at home. Simple changes make a big impact.
