Millions of people suffer from visions problems that make it hard to see or focus. Just look around at the number of people with eyeglasses and contact lenses. The human eye is one of the most complex organs in existence. So it's no wonder that it often has problems. Here are a few common vision problems that can be treated with the help of an optometrist who can prescribe eyeglasses, contacts, or refractive surgery. Two of the most common eye problems are known as myopia and hyperopia. If they don't sound familiar it's probably because you know them by their more common names: nearsightedness and farsightedness. Myopia is characterized by difficulty seeing distant objects clearly while being able to focus on close objects with ease. Hyperopia is the opposite problem. A person with hyperopia is able to focus clearly on far away objects while objects that are close appear blurred or fuzzy. Many people with corrective lenses suffer from one of these two problems. Another common vision problem is astigmatism. This condition results from an irregularly shaped cornea, resulting in blurred vision at any distance whether near or far. Astigmatism is also common with about one in three people suffering from this condition. Another common condition is a result of age-related factors. It's called presbyopia. When the crystalline lens of the eye gradually loses its ability to bring close objects into focus, a person develops presbyopia. This condition is typically a natural part of aging and becomes noticeable when people reach their forties. If you suspect you have any of these conditions, make an appointment with your optometrist.
