A medical mobile unit is a vehicle that contains medical facilities or health providers. These units allow for medical services to be provided to communities which usually have limited access to health care, for example those communities living in rural areas or in areas of poverty with limited health-related infrastructures. |
Many people in rural or poverty-stricken communities are unable to access hospitals, doctors or pharmacies and therefore often suffer from illnesses that are not tended to. Such medical units allow for doctors, nurses and other health care workers to enter the communities in which they are needed, to provide diagnostic and therapeutic care to people in inaccessible areas.
Some of the problems that such medical units are hoping to overcome are those of remote populations being unable to reach medical services especially in times of an emergency. They also attempt to address the lack of awareness and health-seeking behavior by the communities, often due to their lack of education about good health, and the poor management of chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. The inability of the patients to get transport to receive their medication or see a doctor for a checkup is usually the main reason; hence such units can help to reduce this problem.
Medical units usually operate from a specialized type of vehicle, usually a large van or even as large as a truck. These are often provided by the government or be privately owned. Most units consist of a doctor, a nurse, a pharmacist, a driver and numerous support personnel. They also contain the medications and medical equipment necessary to treat patients.
The aim of mobile medical units is not only to treat patients, but also to educate people in disadvantaged communities about health through running health promotion campaigns. It is hoped that through the institution of at least one mobile medical unit per district in each state, all people will have access to appropriate health care, even in the most remote areas.
