How does it Work? Tiny electrodes are sent into the soil using a resistivity meter. This is a current of electricity that goes through the earth then measures the resistance. This is then recorded and we are able to determine what is under the ground by the measure of its resistance. For instance, muddy or damp areas have low resistance and stones with a lot of spacing have high resistance. Each level of resistance will show up a different color on the screen. This will help inform the scientist what is going on underneath the soil.
Who Can use it? Typically those who are in the field of geosciences use a resistivity survey. Geologists will use this to help them discover how old an area is without destroying the soil. Another example is an anthropologist. A lot of the time when digging up or researching areas the point is to preserve the history. In order to decide if an area is an ideal place to excavate, they will use resistivity surveying. This helps locate where not to dig or even if they have the possibility of finding artifacts.
Why do We use it? The earth has depth and the layers are extensive. For us to learn more about our world scientists need to find safer ways of getting information. Some sites may have mass amounts of water underneath and digging that up would only further delay their research. As I have mentioned before, they also want to make sure all soils or artifacts remain with as little damage as possible. Understanding more about our world is important. This type of surveying will help us unveil the history in our soil.
