Dental decay or cavities are the most common reason for loss of teeth and many people are affected by this problem. But most people are likely to ignore dental decay until it comes to the point, where the pain becomes unbearable. At this stage it has already caused infections to the tooth and the underlying bone. It’s worthwhile to understand how dental decays happen since it’s a very common problem. Did you know that bacteria are continuously present in your mouth? And there are certain kinds of bacteria that are capable of attaching themselves to hard surfaces such as the enamel that cover the teeth. If you fail to properly eradicate them, they will multiply, increase in number continuously and grow into a colony. There are proteins in the saliva and they will also combine with the bacteria colony and form a whitish plaque on the tooth. These bacteria nourish on sugars and starches from chocolates, sticky sweets, ice cream, milk, cakes, and even fruits, vegetables and juices. And they generate acid as a result of this process. The enamel, which is the outer hard layer of the tooth, is then affected by this acid and gradually the acid dissolves the tooth creating a cavity and causing a hole in the tooth structure. If you ignore the cavity without taking the correct treatments at this point, you have the risk of losing the tooth. If it goes untreated, the cavity can grow and it can reach the dentin, which is the inner sensitive second layer of the tooth and it can spread more quickly there. If you decide to ignore it at this stage, gradually the decay spreads to the nerves and blood vessels in the center of the tooth and it will lead to tooth abscess. It’s unfortunate that the bacterial attack is so gradual that you may not feel any pain or sensitivity at the initial stages and you will only starts feeling it when it has developed into quite a big cavity. It’s important to learn the causes of tooth decay, in order to prevent them. The first reason is absence of accurate oral hygiene habits. Infants can get decays is they are taking a bottle that contains milk or juices to bed with them. This is known as Nursing Bottle Decay. Root cavities can occur as we grow old. With age the gums recede, leaving parts of the tooth root open. As there is no enamel protecting the tooth roots, these areas are vulnerable to decay. Another reason is the repeated decay, which takes place around current fillings and crowns because these areas are not as smooth as a natural tooth surface. Cavities can also happen due to dry mouth or decreased salivation. Dental decays are preventable and there are certain methods that you have to follow. The most important thing is to get rid of the plaque and bacteria before acid can eat into the tooth. You can do this by simply developing good oral hygiene habits such as brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing daily, and by using fluoridated toothpaste. Make sure you cut down on sweets and replace fast food with fresh vegetables and fruits. Regular dental checkups are also important to ensure your teeth are in good condition.
