With the advent of digital photographic technology it’s really so easy nowadays for anyone to enter the photography industry and make this profession their new career. After all, all you need to be able to do is take a picture, right? Well, it may seem that way to the un-initiated, but I can tell you from my own experience of being a pro for the last 3 years, that it isn’t like that at all. Indeed, the more experience I gain, and the more knowledge and skills I pick up, the more I realise just how much I still have to learn. Here are just some of my thoughts on the subject: Firstly, photography is still a craft much like many other professions. Whilst digital technology allows you to get instant feedback on your work, and hence learn very quickly, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to learn the core elements of the profession, such as learning about posing people, or understanding the art of composition. And perhaps the hardest and most complex area of photography to master is lighting- there are just so many things to consider about lighting, such as the direction and quality of the light you are using, not to mention the colour temperature. The other thing many photographers forget is that mastering the technical and creative sides of photography is only one side of the equation. In fact, I would go so far as to say that to truly make a living in this incredibly competitive industry, that business skills and acumen are actually more important. Over the last year we have attended 5 courses, only 1 of which was about photography. The other 4 courses were on the subject of business. Specifically, how to market your business and hence get more customers. I cannot overemphasise how important it is to raise the profile of your business, and get your name ‘out there’. You cannot be a shrinking violet in this business, and you cannot be afraid of self promotion. After all, if you’re good, why should you hide it from the world. If all this sounds daunting, and puts you off becoming a pro photographer, please don’t let it. See all of this as a challenge. I absolutely love what I do. I love the creative elements of being a photographer and the sense of purpose it gives me is incredible. But above all, I love handing over an album of beautiful pictures to my clients and witnessing their reactions. That truly makes it all worthwhile!
