Lansdowne - Plan a Tour to Beautiful Hill Station of Uttarakhand

Travel & Tourism
Lansdowne is a pretty hill station in the Pauri Garhwal region of Uttaranchal. The weather condition remains perfect for traveling throughout the year. It is a heavenly retreat to all those who wish to be close to be Mother Nature. It is around 1700 meters above sea level.

Lansdowne is founded in 1887 by Lord Lansdowne. The hill station is named after him. Today the famous Garhwal rifles of the Indian Army have its command office here. The regimental Museum and the Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial are the importance places in Lansdowne.

This hill station is away from the hustle and bustle of the city life and is covered by the thick oak and blue pine trees through which one can enjoy the natural beauty of the hill station. It is the only place other than Mussoorie which is counted among the regular tourist destination. Lansdowne tourism offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the scenic beauty and explore the mountain ranges that surround the valley. The best time to visit Lansdowne is from March to October.

Like other hill resorts in north India, Lansdowne too has its fair share of temples and shrines, most of them devoted to the various forms of the Mother Goddess. Jwalpa Devi temple, Durga Devi and Tarkeshwar Mahadev shrine are few. Lansdowne is also suitable for outdoor activities like trekking, hiking and leisurely walks. The trekking trials are through the lovely surroundings passing through the forests which are dark and deep. If you are fit enough you can also go for hiking.

The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant, 25 km from Dehradun and 125 km from Lansdowne. Kotdwar is the nearest railway station, from Kotdwar tourists can get bus or hire a taxi. It will take around 2 hours to reach Lansdowne Hill Station.

Lansdowne is well connected to New Delhi by road. The driving distance between New Delhi and Lansdowne is 295 kilometers and it will take you anywhere between 6-7 hours to get to the tiny hamlet. You can even drive down to Lansdowne from Dehradun, the distance is 170 kilometers and it will take you somewhere between 2-3 hours to get there.

There are few private hotels, lodges, guest houses and resorts for tourist accommodation in Lansdowne. Besides these there is a PWD inspection bungalow, Army Welfare Board Rest House and Uttaranchal Forest Department base camp where you can stay with prior arrangement.

There are not very fancy restaurants in Lansdowne, but at the main market you will find many small restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines. Two well frequented eating places are the Hotel Zayaka for its Momos and Hotel Mayur is well known for its paranthas so go ahead and try them!
