Finding most people that perfect Christmas gift may be a challenge, but not when the person in want of a gift is a NASCAR fan. There are only three things NASCAR fans want; tickets to the next race, a collectible NASCAR diecast miniature replica of their favorite driver’s car, or clothing bearing NASCAR-related logos, usually in that order. Unfortunately, none of the above is inexpensive, so be prepared to pull out the credit card. NASCAR is an acronym that actually stands for the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. The history that gave birth to this family-owned company is the stuff American legends are made of. During the dozen years of Prohibition (1920-1933), makers of bootleg whiskey hired drivers to distribute their illicit products in small, fast cars that could evade police and make efficient deliveries. The drivers modified street cars for speed, handling and cargo capacity. After Prohibition ended and the need for run whiskey ran dry, so the drivers of the 1940s began driving more for pride and profit at organized race events. The stretch of sand at Daytona Beach in Florida became first known as one of the places for fast cars to prove themselves, another being the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah where land speed records were made and broken. NASCAR was founded by Bill France, Sr in 1947, who inspired the three largest racing series: the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. Races are held worldwide every year. So, next time the perfect gift is required for the NASCAR lover in your family, think of how happy that person might be sitting in the grandstands at the next big race, wearing that T-shirt imprinted with a picture of Dale Earnhardt or Kasey Kahne, and a genuine NASCAR diecast replica of Mark Martin’s car in their pocket. That NASCAR fan might even become YOUR biggest fan.
