Having a serious illness and waiting for the results of tests can be a trying and difficult time for anyone that has been through a debilitating illness. Not knowing whether you are going to have a positive or negative diagnosis can lead to a great deal of stress for individuals that are patiently waiting to hear back from their doctor. Having been admitted to the hospital under the suspicion of a serious illness I once spent a long and lonely night in a hospital room while I waited to learn what was going on inside my body. Being subjected to a series of blood tests I awoke the next morning to learn that I had leukemia and because my blood counts were so low I was required to be checked out thoroughly to see if I had any internal bleeding. Because I lacked any sort of immunity in my blood and it was so thin, my doctor prescribed an ultrasound or my internal organs and a scan from a piece of nuclear medicine equipment . Believing that I could hemorrhage at any time because my blood had almost no platelets to clot it, there was a very real threat that my organs and brain could just start secreting blood without any warning. Through the scan that was performed by a nuclear gamma camera I was told that for the time being I had no reason to panic, but just to make certain that I did not develop any further symptoms of blood loss internally I was placed on a heart monitor and given a private room in the ICU. Believing that I would pull through I had to receive a series of blood transfusions before I had the strength to take the chemotherapy treatments that would clear out the leukemia from my body. After undergoing the initial shock of being diagnosed I came to realize that by having the nuclear camera provide a scan of my internal organs I was able to avoid a brush with death and being the treatment that ended up restoring my health and saving my life.
