Voice and data cabling are the major step in the installation process of a land-based phone line, modem, analog line, LAN and other wired networks. Voice and data cabling allow data and vocal communication to be sent over long distances. Various cabling services will wire a building for a company in order to connect the building to other computers and phones in the building as well as to the larger network that exists throughout the world. There are a few types of cabling available the most significant are category 1, category 3 and category 5. Category 1 was a common type of land line that is no longer in use because of its inability to send large amounts of data at once. Category 3 is the new standard and is a copper unshielded twisted pair. The twists in the wire allow the data being transmitted to be sent with less interference. The more twists the more expensive the cable becomes. Category 3 cable is able to send 10mb of data per second. Category 5 cable has more twists per inch and is therefore able to send higher amounts of data per second. Category 5 cable is most often used when high signal reception and far end communication are needed. Installation is very important with voice and data cabling because of the breakdown that can occur if only a single connection is not made correctly. It is also sound advice to get a warranty on the installation of the cabling system. Having a reliable cabling system installed in a business can mean the difference between making money or spending it to continually repair the broken or breaking system. Broken calls and lost transactions from faulty wiring can add up quickly. It is also necessary for a company to consider their future needs with data and communication allowing for growth may mean installing category 5 wire instead of 3.
