Picture frames have been used throughout the ages for a multitude of different reasons, and today they are in nearly every home across the globe from Paris, France to Long Island, New York. The idea of the picture frame actually began 3,000-4,000 years ago. 1. If you look back at ancient Egyptian tomb paintings you will notice that a lot of the artwork of that time period has borders around it. Yes, indeed- that was the beginning of the picture frame! Since then, they have obviously evolved quite a bit from being simply an etched out border to being gorgeous, intricate works of art themselves in some cases. 2. In the Renaissance era, picture frames were even used by members of nobility and monarchs as a sign of status and propaganda. These were called “court frames.” These court frames signified wealth and power by the exquisite workmanship as well as symbolic motifs that were sometimes used. 3. The early days of Christian art evolved the picture frame from being a border as it was in ancient times to etched out ivory to be used for book covers, altarpieces, and diptychs. It is believed that the gold and jewels encrusted in the altarpieces signified the “glories of Heaven.” Although today they are mainly used to display photographs, sports memorabilia, and important certificates, Long Island picture frames can also be used to prevent tearing, soiling, weathering, and bends. Whatever your reasoning behind using a frame is, you can be sure that it will make an impression. After all, they have been around for years.
