We just celebrated week four at Elevate Church. I had actually posted on my Facebook that our family would probably be on time. Whatever . . . we skated through the door with three minutes to spare, once again, thanks to me and a little black shirt/deodorant catastrophe. Both my husband and I are getting almost giddy about attending church. We start scoping the parking lot to see who’s cars are there – which of our new friends will we get to see? Being a part of the beginning of this church is an indescribable experience. Every week is more and more exciting as it morphs and shapes itself into what it will be. On Saturday, we had the opportunity to serve with some wonderful people from Elevate. Amanda Milam organized a mission experience with The Spero Project where we prepared food for 75 families and then took it down to Inner-City Church in South OKC to distribute the food. If you haven’t met Amanda yet, take some time to seek her out. She is a pint-size dynamo. She is only a sophomore in college and has more going on than most thirty-something's I know. She will be working on other missions for our congregation so email her (amandamilam@ymail.com) and find out how you can help out with future endeavors. It’s really neat to see more and more people each week. If you have just been reading our website – don’t you think it’s time to come experience Elevate for yourself? If you have been attending, have you invited your friends? What better way to build up our church and raise leaders than to do it with the people with which we share our lives? This week, Pastor Steven started the service with a clip about Marcus Aurelius and setting the historical context of the scripture we would study (The voiceover was done by Count Gregore, for those of you who know who he is) and it was so cool. Steven led us in a message about making our work meaningful and based it on the scripture in Ephesians 6: 5-8. In my job, this can definitely be a challenge. I sat there thinking about this and the jobs of those around me. It’s the same for all of us. I couldn’t think of anyone that I have met at Elevate that probably couldn’t say the same thing. After talking to a former service member and Elevator, Steven pointed out that we need to realize it is not about “me,” it is about the mission . . . and the mission is to love others. Steven’s challenge to us this week was based on the prayer, “Lord. I commit this time to you.” He asked that we set our clocks for every hour and we just take the time to pray that prayer for God and utilize our time at work, whatever that work may be, to glorify God. Man, was that hard. In my work, I really have to struggle with my attitude about people and there were times I was praying that prayer out of desperation. If you haven’t done that yet, try it. You will really stop and think about your actions and the emotions you exude, hour by hour. Is your work glorifying God? I sure had to check myself, more than once, throughout the day. We continue to hang out after the service. Come on, there’s donuts and chips and beverages. Good stuff. Just take a few minutes to meet the other people who are embarking on this journey together. We have met the coolest people. Our resounding feeling is that they are people just like us. That’s just what we needed: people like us who love God and want to serve him right where we are. Is that what you seek as well? A place where you can love and be loved? Then you have to check us out. My husband said it best. When Steven preaches, it is just like you are sitting there talking to him in his living room. There is no condescension or hell-fire and brimstone – just a Pastor that loves his sheep and is herding his flock in a totally rockin’ service.
