We all know that it is not a good idea to go grocery shopping on an empty stomach, and some people are better at following that advice than others. If you go to the store hungry you’ve lost the battle in grocery savings before you even begin. Even if you aren’t feeling ravenous when you walk into the store, the delicious smells of the hot food display can easily become temptations by the time you leave. Think about what your experience is usually like when you go to the store with a healthy appetite. All of the sudden all of those instant satisfaction type foods seem a lot more appealing. After all, when you are hungry you don’t want to have to wait for your food to be done baking. Why bake a casserole when you could just eat some nice healthy baked potato chips instead right? If you are strong willed enough that you can make it past all of those snack aisles successfully without having any chips, cookies or candy bars in your basket, that’s quite the accomplishment, but don’t let down your guard quite yet. Have you ever noticed how conveniently located the hot food display is? It seems like the closer you get to the cash registers, the stronger the scent of delicious fried chicken becomes. That’s because your friendly neighborhood grocer knows that even the people who can withstand candy and potato chips will be tempted by just about any premade, warm and delicious morsel that doesn’t fall into the junk food category. This is the point where temptations become stronger than desires to stick to a budget, and the hungry shopper gives in time and time again.
