Over the past eight years international crushing and compaction specialists Broons have marketed the BPB200 and larger WX300 SBM Rock Crushers throughout Australia for road construction and maintenance use. Recently they added the intermediate-sized BPB250 to the range to cater for the needs of rural shires and road contractors in today’s economic climate. Fitting between the BPB200 and WX300, the BPB250 has all the ruggedness and crushing ability of the WX300. At 2.4m crushing width, the BPB250 gains over half a metre on it’s smaller sibling and is just marginally less than the WX300. The additional 0.6 metres working width of the BPB250 compared with the smaller BPB200 can often mean one less pass on a rural road thereby making it very cost effective. It can be fitted to a 150hp (120kW) tractor which many councils already have in their fleet. Progressive shires at the forefront in road construction are using the environmentally friendly SBM method of rehabilitating worn unsealed road pavements by utilizing in -situ materials. These councils have made efficient use of SBM\'s rock crushers to upgrade their unsealed rural roads and all have reported significant improvement in pavement quality and reduced maintenance. Inverell Shire Council in New South Wales recently purchased a SBM BPB 250 Rock Crusher which they intend to use for re-sheeting existing road pavements. Manager Works, Brendan Moran, said that they had only used the BPB250 sparingly since they took delivery of it. “We have only used it on very course material so far. We bought it to break down the larger stone in amongst the fines and it did a very good job. We will have the need to use it a fair bit in the future.” “We expect to use the Rock Crusher for about six months of the year, and it will connect to the tractor that we will use to tow a Grid Roller for the other six months of the year,” Brendan said. Using a grader, the existing pavement can be ripped to around 150mm or 200mm deep. For a normal dual lane rural road, the material is placed in two windrows and then crushed using the SBM Rock Crusher. With deeper pavements, the SBM can crush K(C)8 the rock insitu without the need to create a windrow. Water added during crushing to minimise dust is retained in the finished product to aid compaction. The Kirpy BPB 250, with its twelve fixed and toughened carbide-tipped hammers, crushes rock up to 300mm in diameter into 40mm minus product at a rate up to 150m³ an hour. Simply connected to a 120kW tractor with a constantly variable transmission (or creeper gear) through its three-point linkage means that the SBM is OH&S friendly and the operator can be crushing within a minute of arriving at the site. Council Works Managers and operators that have used SBM rock crushers have been impressed by their durability, quality and simple dual poly V-belt drive.
