Recognizing and Understanding Personality Types in your Workplace

Recognizing and understanding personality types and the ability of co-workers to get along with each other are so important in the workplace. Knowing more about personality types and the attributes that are common to those personalities can give you a meaningful insight into developing better co-worker relationships within the workplace and customer relationships in the business marketplace. This can be used as an inside secret advantage......a winning advantage.

Personality experts have determined that humans exhibit 4 basic personality types and these can be represented or symbolized by birds. There are several articles that Dr. Peter Bender, noted public speaker, has published relating in great detail these personality types and these works are available on his site; www.peterursbender.com. The four bird symbols represent certain constant attributes and traits that are common across these personality types and people with common personality types, sometimes flock together like birds do. Many major corporations use this style of personality trait training to strengthen their leadership and sales teams. Companies like GE and Xerox.

The 4 bird symbolized personality types are; 1. The Owl Personality: Thinker, Analytical Traits: Wants to know things, Wants accuracy, Likes lists, Numbers & Statistics, Likes Details

2. The Dove Personality: Amiable, caring, sensitive, helper, very personal, indirect communicator Traits: Wants to know why, Becomes very personally involved, Builds personal relationships, Very supportive

3. The Peacock Personality: Expressive personality, Intuitive, Impulsive, Front man Traits: Loves social situations, parties, likes appreciation, a pat on the back, Likes to inspire others

4. The Eagle Personality: The driver, Direct, Action person, The boss, Choleric Traits: Wants to know what, Wants to save time, Wants results, Needs to be in Control, Direct Communicator:

It can be a lot of fun, as well as enlightening, to take a group of people who work together and conduct Dr. Bender’s personality quiz to determine which personality each of the individuals possess, what makes them tick.....what drives them. To discover what the emotional needs of the personality type are, how to better and successfully communicate to these various individual personality types, Discovering this particular information about yourself and your co-worker may help you to relate better to that individual. In the same sense, discovering what makes your customer tick and what their emotional needs are may help you to anticipate their needs and to provide better answers......even before they ask. This knowledge can help you focus your sales and a customized market plan for the customer and can give you a leading edge up on your competition in the market-sales-place. It will also help you to establish a more personal and trustworthy connection to individuals who you better understand.

Now, many people with certain personality types and traits are drawn toward certain kinds of jobs and lifestyles. The peacock personality types make good public relations people and they do well in marketing, sales and show business. The eagle personality is often the boss as they are demanding, push a lot, want results and are the drivers. They are driven to succeed. The owls are often CPA types, and teachers. The doves are care givers, like nurses and social workers. People are drawn toward professions in which they are most comfortable with their personality type.......jobs in which their personalities can rise and the individual can feel at ease. Sometimes, a person will find themselves in a position in which they are uncomfortable personality wise. The job doesn't fit who they really are. Maybe they have the dove personality and they are working with a flock of eagles. This condition would make life harder on the dove personality unless the eagles are aware of the personality needs of the dove type employee. Sometimes, if a person is in a position that pushes their personality to be something else, the person will begin to shift and adjust to the demand if the individual is adaptive. An example is a peacock personality who is in sales and in a very competitive and aggressive environment. This individual may shift towards an eagle personality type to survive in the workplace and in their market-sales position.

Spend some time appraising your co-workers, your boss and your customers. Determine where you believe they may fit into the personality traits model symbolized by birds. Pay attention to their behaviors and actions and you will learn a lot about their personalities. Give some extra thought to your relationships with these individuals and interact with them based on what their personality drive is. If you correctly determine their personality type and needs, you may see a change in how they react to you. The same goes for your clients and customers. If you are working with a manager or administrator who is an eagle and wants results, wants it his way and wants it yesterday, you can better plan to supply the needs of this individual based on what you know about their personality, what drives them, their behaviors and expectations. You can anticipate those expectations and be successfully ahead of your competitor.

Large sales companies around the world spend thousands of dollars training their marketing and sales forces with personality profile training to aid their representatives in achieving greater sales and market successes.
