Panic Attacks: A panic attack is a sudden episode of extreme fear which strikes without warning. Panic Attacks Symptoms usually include rapid heartbeat, nausea, shortness of breath and a feeling of intense dread. It is not uncommon for people experiencing a panic attack to fear that they are having a heart attack or that they are about to lose their mind. A panic attack can be terrifying enough on its own, but perhaps the worst part is that they can happen anytime, anywhere - even when you're asleep. Because of this, many people who suffer from panic attacks find that the fear of having another attack can be just as bad as the attack itself and can make them avoid social situations where they may experience an attack. If you have panic attacks, you're not alone; according to statistics, around one third of adults experience one or more panic attacks annually. It is possible to experience panic attacks as an isolated incident or they could be a recurring problem which could indicate an underlying issue including a generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression or panic disorder. Anxiety: We've all experienced anxiety before; it's normal to feel tense before a date, or when you start a new job. We've all felt anxious and worried about problems within our families, when we want to ask for a raise or a promotion, in unfamiliar social settings and so on. Anxiety is perfectly natural. It's part of the body's "fight or flight" response and it serves as a warning of potential danger. While anxiety may be normal, when you experience overwhelming anxiety which is so severe or so frequent that it's limiting your ability to live your life, you may have an anxiety disorder and if so, there are treatments available which can help in coping with anxiety so you can start living again. Treatments including relaxation, talk therapy, hypnotherapy for anxiety, eating a healthier diet, getting enough sleep and exercise can all help to reduce the problem. There are many different types of anxiety disorder; you might have unexplained anxiety and be unable to identify the cause. You might have intense panic attacks which come on without any advance warning. You may suffer from compulsive behaviour or social inhibitions - or you might have a phobia which doesn't seem to cause anxiety in anyone else you know. Trauma & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by experiencing a traumatic situation or by seeing someone else experience a traumatic event. It is common for people who experience or witness a traumatic event to have some problem coping with what they've been through and getting back to their lives. In many cases, the anxiety and fear will subside on its own; but there are situations where the anxiety can persist or even become worse over a period of months or years, even to the point where it becomes disruptive to the rest of your life. If you are experiencing this, you more than likely have PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder commonly affects people who experience war, natural disasters, physical/sexual assault or serious accidents as well as those who witness those events. PTSD can also affect people who experience the loss of a loved one, or who have gone through a painful separation or divorce which can lead to isolation and even sexual problems. Feelings of fear and helplessness are common. If you suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, dealing with it alone will be very difficult, it is vital that you see a mental health professional for diagnosis and PTSD treatment to help you overcome your condition as soon as possible.
