The first problem area is the thermostat. That device is the brain of the heater. It regulates when the furnace turns on, how long it stays on and when it shuts off. The thermostat is either wired directly to the heater or sends electromagnetic signals to it to tell it what to do. If a heating appliance refuses to turn on or stay on, it is likely that the temperature control unit is to blame. It is possible that the device either needs new batteries or new connecting wires. If the thermostat is working properly, the next item you should check on a furnace is its lighter. When you turn on a furnace, there is an element that causes the heating material to burn. Over time, that element wears out and is no longer able to perform its function. If your heater turns on and you still smell the scent of unburned materials, a faulty lighter is usually to blame. The other evidence of this issue is revealed when the blower comes on but only expels cold air. It must be mentioned that you should never open a heater if you can smell gas in or near it. Unburned petroleum can quickly burst into flame from a small spark. You can easily create that discharge with a cigarette lighter, a match or even the release of static electricity from your hair or skin. Petroleum fumes must always be evacuated before work on a furnace can safely begin. The final problem a warming element can suffer from is a faulty motherboard. Just like in all appliances that are run by computers, the central brain of the system can become damaged or wear out over time. You can diagnose a broken motherboard by engaging the temperature control unit. If it should be turning on the warmer but the appliance refuses to start functioning in any way, it likely needs to have its central brain replaced. Before you install the new one, it is always a good idea to manually turn off the power to the furnace and then switch it back on again. Sometimes, performing a hard reboot on the motherboard is all that is required to fix it. Heating repair begins with a basic set of steps. For any warmer, there a few fundamental parts that can malfunction. The temperature control unit may be communicating badly with the warming device.
