U.S. scientists have invented a new way to use E. coli to produce a new type of biofuel – butanol, what’s production efficiency about ten times higher than the previous method. Natural E. coli can not make butanol,University of California, Los Angeles, researchers say,they used genetically modified the method to make escherichia coli have manufacturing n-buoh ability, and try to enhance metabolization process, improve the production efficiency of n-butyl alcohol. Use of this new method, from every litres of medium can produce 15 g to 30 grams of n-butyl alcohol, however,the previous methods can only produce 1 g to 4 g.every litres of medium. Some microorganisms have a natural ability to manufacture n-butanol, but the manufacturing process will produce by-products, increasing the cost of separation and extraction of n-butanol. The researchers said the use of E. coli can only output the n-butanol, no by-products. E. coli is an easy manipulation of microorganisms,which has been used for a variety of chemical substances in industrial production. The team hopes to keep improvement in new methods of base , inventing more effective, and can be used for industrial production of n-buoh extraction process. N-butanol is an alcohol organic compounds, each molecule has four carbon atoms, is an important chemical raw material, which has excellent properties as a fuel, and can make use of existing transport systems and engine fuel system, without the need for system transformation. How to use biological method for the efficient production of N-butanol, the current is one of the hot topics of biofuels. Currently, the U.S. burned 530 billion liters of gasoline per year, while consumption of biodiesel only 7.5 billion liters. E. coli is not the most efficient bio-fuel production bacteria. During the experiment, they get the maximum theoretical efficiency is only 10%. If want to put the technology to commercial production, it is best to increase production efficiency to 80% to 90%, while achieving its large-scale production.
