A lawyer, according to the English Dictionary, is a person learned in terms of the law, a person who practices law. Working as an attorney, or a counsel involves applying the legal theories and their knowledge to solve individual problems, or to prove the guilt of someone. The meaning of the word counsel varies from country to country, but if we take for example a city, the lawyers in Halifax are attorneys who practice law, and it is not used to call someone a patent agent, or paralegal. In civil countries, the defenders are trained and also employed as a part of the judiciary. However, there are some tendencies since the 20th century for the attorneys to specialize in a certain career, and only take cases relevant to their career.
