Today adhd and autism are being diagnosed both individually and in conjunction with each other at a much higher rate than ever before. This has led a lot parents and caregivers to be somewhat confused. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder produces symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity so how is it that the two disorders can be linked? In other words, is it at all possible for a child to have both ADHD as well as have Autism? If it is possible, what can parents do in order to provide for and support their child? Do the symptoms of these two disorders have anything in common? This is an important question given the fact that there are an alarmingly high number of misdiagnoses each and every year, and one cannot help but wonder if the symptoms could be mistaken in some way. Let us take a look at the symptoms of each of adhd and autism: The symptoms and behaviors of Autism * The child finds it difficult to mix with their peers and so does not tend to make friends very easily. * They do not really have a fear of danger and so can get into some serious situations. * They are known for throwing tantrums and being really distressed even when there is no real reason to be, as far as the parent or guardian can see. * Kids with Autism will giggle and laugh even when they should not, or when such behavior is not justified. * They are oftentimes unaffectionate and will resist cuddling from parents and guardians. This contributes to the idea that the Autistic child is very aloof and unemotional when it comes to those closest to them. * They can be either very active or else not active enough. * They rarely, if ever, make and/or sustain eye contact even when spoken to directly. * They are impulsive and have a tendency to make mistakes that might seem careless to others. They are also known for returning homework that is untidy and sloppy. * Their motor skills are not in harmony. The symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder * The ADHD child is not inclined to play quietly whether they are alone or playing with friends. They are also inclined to be disruptive even when playing. * They are impatient and do not like waiting for their turn when playing games or engaged in some other kind of structured activity. * They are inclined to engage in rather dangerous activities as though they are totally unaware of the potentially lethal consequences. * They show no inhibitions when it comes to their actions in that they do not consider what the consequences of the behaviors will be. * They are inclined to throw very severe temper tantrums. This is probably one of the reasons why parents are often told that their child’s behavior is nothing more than indicative of the fact that they are lacking in parenting skills, and that the child should be disciplined more. * The ADHD child sees nothing wrong with interrupting conversations and will blurt out answers to questions that have not even been fully asked yet. * They can be aloof and reject cuddling especially when they are still fairly young. * They are constantly on the move, trying to do everything and be everywhere at once. * They appear to not listen when spoken to. * They ignore important details, make apparently careless mistakes, and often lose items that they need to complete certain tasks and activities such as school work. * They might do inexplicable things like put the toothpaste in the fridge and the juice in the medicine cabinet. * Their motor skills do not work in harmony. As one can see, just from comparing the two lists above, there are a number of symptoms that adhd and autism have in common. Would you be interested in learning more about adhd and autism?
