In February 2004 eighteen Chinese cockle pickers died in Morecambe bay, Lancashire. The cockle pickers had got cut off by the fast rising tide and although they attempted to swim to safety, they died in near freezing waters. The coastal areas in Morecambe bay and surrounding Lancashire coast lines are expected to be lined with about £6million pounds worth of cockles. This is why so many people are attracted to the area and it was suggested that the Chinese cockle pickers had been working for a gang leader who was reaping the benefit. Morecambe Bay and the surrounding areas are notorious for being tricky areas to fish. Fast rising tides and quick sand make fishing or cockling a dangerous business. The same conditions apply further up the coast on the Ribble Estuary. Twenty six inexperienced cockle pickers have been rescued from the area in the last two months and as such the government are planning to dredge the area to stop any further incidents. This has been met with outrage from responsible fishers who have been using the area for many years. Of course the Lancashire coastline is not just a danger for the fishing industry. Just recently a Land Rover Audi A5 Essex car got trapped in soft sand near Morecambe bay and despite the publics attempt to get it out, it may become a permanent fixture on the bay. It just shows how people can easily be caught out by the tide. Walkers on beaches are advised to check the tide times before walking out onto the sand banks and always keep a check on your position on the beach. Please continue reading here: Audi A5 Essex
