It is a strange world we live in as the medical profession does not seem to be able to offer help for ADHD children. It is full of paradoxes and contradictions. Take the typical psychologist whose only answer is to medicate. Then there is the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) who say that behavior modification is the most effective treatment. Then in their annual congress, they state that they are recommending that the lower age limit to prescribe Ritalin should be reduced to four years of age. There are many children who need help and they are not getting it. One child may be listless and have problems in sleeping. Another child may be losing weight and hardly eating at all. Some children veer from being lackadaisical to throwing violent tantrums and there are severe mood swings. Why? Simply because these are the side effects of the psychostimulant medications so beloved of the pharmaceutical companies and who think that they are the answer. It is clear that in very many cases they are not. One girl who was on Concerta complained that she could no longer eat or sleep. Her psychiatrist just wanted to put her on Zoloft but her parents are convinced that her sadness is a result of the Concerta medication. They just do not believe that depression could have been an underlying condition. Their daughter had always been carefree before she was put on medication. So, the children are put on a medication treadmill and little else is done. So, what help for ADHD children can we put in place? We need to look at the medication issue and try to find an alternative if the meds are causing significant side effects like the case I have mentioned above. There are homeopathic remedies which can help the child to pay attention and concentrate so that grades in school can be maintained. There are no side effects because these medications work on restoring the lost mind body balance. You will never see a black box warning on these preparations and also there are no health risks at all. They are also very reasonably priced. As regards the home environment we need to make sure that the following are in place:- • good behavior is frequently rewarded and praised • unacceptable behavior is ignored or in more serious cases, consequences are imposed • the home environment is a loving and caring one where the child’s positive traits are noted and encouraged to develop. • there are lots of opportunities to do physical activities in the open air. • there is frequent contact with the school and the teachers so that progress is followed and problems on either side are communicated effectively. • junk food and processed food full of additives and colorings are severely limited These are the tried and tested ways to give help for ADHD children and supported by most medical and parenting associations. It is a pity that many doctors or psychiatrists have yet to be convinced. Why not find out how you can give your offspring a much happier childhood? Experts now tell us that help for ADHD children should be behavior modification techniques as these are by far the most effective ADHD treatment.
