Bali is an island located in Indonesia. It is just barely south of the equator and lies between Java on the west and Lombok on the east and is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Java is very close with only the Bali Strait separating the two islands. You can even cross the strait on a ferry that travels between Java and Bali. Mount Agung, known as ?the mother mountain? is the tallest point in Bali standing over 3,000 meters above sea level. It is an active volcano that is the easternmost peak in Bali. It last erupted in 1963, killing over 1,500 people. To this day it is dominant of the surrounding climate and is visible from many points on the island. Surrounding the island of Bali are beautiful coral reefs. There are also many gorgeous beaches, some made of white sand, mostly on the south part of the island, while others are comprised of black sand from the volcanic rock. There is no major water way in Bali, however, the Ho River can allow travel by small sampan boats. There are, however, several other rivers that visitors can enjoy for recreational purposes such as white water rafting and pass through areas that are otherwise inaccessible. The view of the rocks and valleys are a sight to be seen. There is a lot of potential for tourism in Bali, though the current tourism concentration is on the southern part of the island is in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Oberoi and their surrounding areas. Kuta is located on the beach and boasts numerous hotels, guest houses and luxury villas to stay in. One point about Kuta is that it has treacherous tides and people have to be careful of the common strong rip tides. However, aside from the Tanah Lot temple, which is on the coast in the ocean and isn't accessible during high tide, there is no major tourism in this region. Denpasar, the capital city of Bali, has around a half a million residents and is the largest city in Bali. Singaraja is the second largest city and is located on the northern side of the island. In addition to all of these other beautiful places to visit in Bali is Padang Padang which is known for its surfing. There are also many resorts and private villas to rent in this vicinity that are luxurious, many of which look out over the ocean and huge tidal waves.
