Moving to Suffolk to escape the rat race

Health,Family & Parenting,Advice
If you want to escape the rat race in London why not take a look at living in beautiful Suffolk, famous for its Constable Countryside and rural life.

The area is full of ‘chocolate-box’ thatched houses nestling in pretty English villages with quaint tea shops around every corner, it seems.

Suffolk is where the famous landscape artist John Constable painted many scenes of the Dedham Vale on the Essex/Suffolk border near his birthplace of East Bergholt.

His best-known paintings include Dedham Vale, painted in 1802 and The Hay Wain, painted in 1821. Yet in his lifetime, he sold most of his paintings to buyers in France.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Suffolk has a thriving arts community and attracts many people from across East Anglia, plus commuters who want to kick back at the weekends and escape the confines of city life.

Music and art combine at Aldeburgh’s Snape Maltings, which is the scene of a Festival of Music and Arts each year. You’ll find other arts events there throughout the year. But if dance is your thing then visit DanceEast on the rejuvenated Ipswich waterfront where you’ll find world-class dance performances, and there are many more Suffolk attractions to keep your attention. Check out the Anglo-Saxon royal burial site at Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge.

Historically, Suffolk has a rich past. Important Anglo-Saxon communities were set up here at Sudbury and Ipswich and the county boundaries have undergone very little change. However, the same cannot be said about its coastline from Walberswick in the north to Landguard in the south, as coastal erosion is on the minds of the local community and local government alike.

But it is this same coastline that is the source of so much pleasure for families and friends as there is a well-trodden tourist trail to the area, especially in towns close to the coast from Felixstowe to Aldeburgh and beyond.

In the height of summer, why not see if you can rent out one of the lovely beach huts in Southwold. If you wanted to own one you will have to dig deep in your pocket as one made the front page of the local newspaper in recent times when it sold for almost £100,000. So renting one for a week is a much better option if you are visiting.

After doing your homework and deciding you are going to take the plunge and pack up all your goods and chattels in London to head for Suffolk, you might be wanting your elderly relatives to be nearer to you so you can look out for them easier.

If you are searching for somewhere for them to live look towards Southwold, Bury St Edmonds, Walberswick and Felixstowe care homes to name but a few. There they can enjoy the rest of their days in tranquil surroundings with a live-in community for company.

Getting to Suffolk is relatively easy from London and the south east. By road you can either connect to the A12 or A11/A14, and trains from London Liverpool Street run hourly to Suffolk and more frequently during peak times.
