The use of adjustable bed can be traced back to the 16th century. However, it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that a doctor by the name of Willis Gatch was given credit for its development. First used primarily in hospitals to address a number of health conditions, it has gradually made its way into circulation with the general public. There are a number of designs that have been developed, including basic frames which have a fashion frame to please even the most discerning tastes. The basic design of the frame for this type of therapeutic system is universally the same. The differences occur in bonus features provided by the manufacturer, this includes items such as heaters, remotes, massage abilities, and more. Another way these designs are set apart from each other includes the selections in mattress type. The frame allows the individual to raise the head, feet, or both. These devices have a small motor which is used to lift the area to the desired level of comfort. The motor is controlled by a remote control or a touch system that is easily accessible from the bed. There are a number of different mattress selections available for use with these adjustable beds. The materials range from metal springs, foam, and air coils. Each of these mattress types have their own characteristics to best address the needs of the person using the therapeutic bed. Coil spring mattresses are similar to ones provided for a regular bed. These are created in a number of firmness levels which provides a selection for a person to find what best suits their needs. These mattresses also provide the options of choosing pillow tops and other personal choices; these are the same as offered for traditional beds. The flexibility of the material has been modified to match the function of the bed to alter shape. As with the traditional coil spring mattresses, these can become uncomfortable and require regular changes. There are two types of foam mattresses that individuals may select from; one is memory foam, the other hypoallergenic latex foam. These are more expensive than the coil spring options, but better appreciated. The largest difference is that these mattresses are made to adjust to the weight of the person who has laid down on it. The lack of metal springs allows the material to provide a minimal amount of resistance and prevents pressure points from developing. This cradling effect prevents unnecessary stress being placed on joints which is greatly appreciated by those who suffer from joint or inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and back pain. These forms of material are preferred by people as is evidenced by consumers who have used them not using any other type thereafter. Another popular type of adjustable bed is made from air. These mattresses are made from air coils which can be inflated or deflated to the comfort level of the person using it. The support coils do not use a hard metal material which enables a better response and comfort level for individuals. These beds are also preferred by couples with different sleeping comfort levels, since each side of the bed can be changed to match those needs.
