With education budgets becoming increasingly tight, and the Harnessing Technology Grant as a result of come to an end this year, schools are likely to be looking at ways to cut costs in regards to buying their ICT equipment. With laptop trolleys now a critical tool for any classroom, some schools have reevaluated DIY charging cabinets to avoid wasting cash, risking the safety of both their young people and equipment. Teachers and ICT technicians considering engineering of laptop charging cabinets may choose to think about the following... When charging multiple lap tops or netbooks, the way in which power is sent on the equipment is an vital consideration. If too much power is used at once, a self-made laptop trolley could excursion a fuse, potentially damaging the devices or other electrical equipment inside building. Even more worrying, injuries to both pupils and staff may appear if electrics are not properly wired. Manufactured laptop charging trolleys and cabinets have to stick to extensive health and safety requirements to ensure the safety of their people. Carts made by expert manufacturers use surge protection, load protection and low voltage charging, and these essential safety features are generally difficult to replicate with DIY laptop charging trolleys. To lower your costs, many homemade laptop buggies or DIY netbook carts are made of wood or plastic. In addition to the being rather ineffective with deterring or preventing fraud of expensive equipment, these materials can also pose risks to safety. Laptops can create significant heat right after they are charging, and, the bottomline is, heat and wood don't mix. Secure metal laptop trolleys don't only protect against notebook theft, but their sophisticated ventilation systems prevent lap tops from over-heating. Laptop trolleys are a superb solution to charge and store multiple laptops and also netbooks, but homemade versions quite often risk damaging the equipment they are designed to protect. Cost-effective laptop cabinets which combine safe power management using a metal chassis are a far better way to safely retail store and charge laptops. Transporting lap tops in homemade trolleys may also pose a problem. Without attention a laptop and its AC adaptor might not weigh much, but several laptops and adaptors in the wooden cabinet will add weight and make the ac unit, if not fitted while using the right castor wheels, difficult to maneuver and even unstable. To enhance stability, brakes should be fitted to mobile cabinets to ensure this doesn't move or topple over when in use.
