Secondary Glazing and Condensation

Home Improvement
Many property owners try to add secondary glazing in an effort to enhance the effectiveness of the windows, but there are some issues that are likely to happen with secondary glazing and condensation. For people who are unaware of the term secondary glazing and have no idea what it is, secondary glazing is an extra glazing pane fixed onto the inside of an existing single glazed window. Usually a single glazed piece of glass, but occasionally it could be a plastic film or shrink wrap. It is regularly bordered by a metal frame which includes some kind of casing or gasket to make a sealed inner air space between the new glazing and the old.

Even though secondary glazing is not a subject that many people are aware of, most of them have heard about condensation and how it normally takes place. As windows are made from glass, it’s quite likely that the temperatures inside and outside of the glass are dissimilar, and if they are dissimilar enough to chill the moistness that is in the air between the glass, it will form a film of condensation on the surface. It is significant to prevent both dampness and moistness with wooden windows because they are likely to make wood become rotten and warp, or in the worst case the wood will become moldy. And this condition of decaying is most likely to go unnoticed, and by the time the property owners identify the issue it’s too late and often the windows need to be replaced.

Some people may mix up secondary glazing with double glazing. In double glazing glass panes are sealed with a vacuum in a workshop that is moisture controlled whereas in secondary glazing normal air full of moistness is kept between the new glazing and the old pane of glass. A window that is drafty lets moistness to stay inside as well, and that will increase the likelihood of the wood decaying. And further, there is a higher risk of increasing humidity level between the two panes of glass, all the wood that is exposed inside of the seal will be affected by this.

Another reason that causes condensation is the metal frame on the glazing panel. Just like glass, metal similarly transfers the air temperature, so that moisture may form on it as well. Although the moistness on glass can be seen easily, the moistness on metal is hard to spot.

Wooden windows that are wearying due to moistness must be changed straightaway. It is significant that you think of all alternatives when making decisions on how to weatherize windows, since replacement can be expensive and involves lots of work. You will find advantages and disadvantages with every option when you evaluate them, but secondary glazing and condensation is a key problematic area that you have to keep in mind. You can talk to an expert on the subject to get more advice on this subject, so that you could make a more informed decision.

If you are looking for glass replacement and glass repairs of your windows, it’s always advisable to turn to a professional to get your job completed properly.
