Digitizing or digitization refers to the conversion of an object, image, sound, document or a signal ,which is present in continuous or analog format in to a discrete set of its points or samples. The result obtained from this act is represented as o and 1 or the binary code and though represents the same entity, has a different format. The concept of digitization has influenced various aspects of human life, revolutionizing the way objects and entities are perceived. It has changed the qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of day to day life. (1) Difference between digital and analog A sequence of 0 and 1 represents the whole information in digital signals. These are called bits and the whole sequence is called a byte and carries encoded information. In contrast to analog signals which are continuously variable, digital signals are discrete with respect to a number of signals at a given point of time or a number of points in a given time period. (2) Process of digitizating Digitization occurs in two steps consisting of discretization and quantization. Discretization includes reading of an analog signal and sampling the value of the same at a particular point. This is called a sample and has a precise value at that point of time.
