Railway travel in the country is an essential means of transport. The fabulous connectivity of rail network makes it necessary to use this mode of transport in India. Moreover the traveling in train is cheaper than flying in the country. Second Class and General Coaches provide highly economic mode of travel to poor people and lower middle class. With the modernization of railway reservations in India, other necessary legalities have come into the picture. The tickets in major towns are purchased from computerized reservation counters. These computers are networked all over India in order to provide instance access to reservation availability and status. All this became possible when IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Company) was set up. This is a public sector enterprise incorporated in 1999 under the Ministry of Railways in India. The goal was to manage the hospitality and tourism aspect of the Railway. One such aspect has been Internet Ticketing besides catering rail tourism and setting up of food plazas on number of stations IRCTC has provided many options for booking online. This has resulted in relieving travelers from the stress of standing in long queue. Ticketing process has been further eased by purchase of I and E Tickets. Though purchasing tickets in this manner has eased the process saved on time and money there some conditions that apply. Even if you have purchased a ticket from the booking counter you should carry a photo identity. Of late it has become mandatory for those who have purchased ticket from computerized reservation counter to carry an identity card. Certain precautions have to be taken when buying I or E Tickets. It is wise to travel only with a confirmed ticket since in this case you are bound to be ticketless if your reservation is not confirmed during the journey. The money is returned back to the holders account and the ticket becomes invalid. Hence it is better to check the pnr status of your ticket before board the train. The photo identity has become a must accompaniment when traveling in upper class coaches. There are many IDs that are acceptable. These are identity cards with photograph and a serial number issued by Central or State governments. Driving license Pan Card and the unique identification number card called the Aadhar Card in India. Other acceptable IDs are Bank passbook, voters card and ration card. Though this system speaks of red tape but the required of ID Proof helps the travelers themselves. The mandatory requirement has managed to curb agent misuse during the reservation. Further misuse of tickets stolen or lost has been prevented by this means. In time to come reservation for railway journey will become more easy and less stressful.
