Digitizing What is digitizing? Digitizing an entity is the process of converting a continuous or analog information into a discrete digital format. The process can be applied to be converting letters, manuscripts, books, photographs, maps, audio recordings, microforms, motion pictures, ephemera, etc. Three-dimensional objects can also be digitized. The goal of digitization is to improve access to the materials, to permit long term storage without distortion and to manipulate it without affecting the original copy, the manipulated copy can be saved as a separate entity . Digitized materials become searchable via databases on the Internet. What all can be digitized? All kind of documents, multimedia, images, music, movies, designs etc can be digitized. Digitization of books has permitted maintenance of digital libraries which ensure wide spread availability of material without being affected by the atrocities of environment and time. Digitization of music has improved the quality of sound as well permits manipulation to make the sound more effective. Images can be easily digitized and these have a better appeal. Not just multimedia and entertainment, digitization has greatly influenced the medical investigating techniques as well. Digitizing radiographs, CT scans and three dimensional scans have permitted better interpretation of results and more accurate diagnosis. These images can be visualised from different perspectives and at various contrast ranges which provides an insight into features which might have been overlooked earlier. The fashion industry hasn’t been left untouched by the phenomenon either. With the advent of digitised prints and embroidery there seems to be no limits to what can be materialised from creative imagination. How is digitization carried out? The process involves conversion of continuous analog variable into discreet digital signal. The analog input is read at a particular point of time and is quantised for that point of time. The value obtained is rounded off to obtain a series of discreet variables represented as 0 and 1 called bits. A series of bits is called bytes. Thus it can be said that the analog signal is encoded into a digital format which can be interpreted by the digital device to resurrect the original entity. For the materials to be digitized, they are required to be captured or read effectively and accurately (e.g., scanning, digital photography, digital recording) without altering the information that the material contains. Thus an input medium is required. Therefore, digital representation essentially contains the same information/data as the analog representation. Since the information is now in discrete form it becomes easy to store, manipulate and transmit it using simple devices. This process is assisted by various simple equipment which have been standardised and have some basic guidelines so that the conversion is of high quality and compatible with other devices to which the information is transmitted. This also ensures consistency. Poor digital conversion is of not much use and considered substandard. It cannot be denied that digitizing has become an integral part of human existence and has improved the qualitative as well as quantitative aspects of various process and procedures. This technology must be embraced and developed further for implementation to other spheres as well. Digitizing materials become searchable via databases on the Internet.
