Can behavior therapy which is rather expensive really help child behavior problems? That is a question that many parents ask nowadays. Very often, all we have to do is to take one step back and ask ourselves whether any of our strategfes or lack of them are actually creating frustration and trauma. The only way to find out tonis to ask the child and to do this in a totally non judgmental way. Let us imagine that you want to help child behavior problems such as truancy and failure to abide by any of the rules. There must be a reason for the child's refusal to comply and to follow the rules. So, we have to find out what the real problem is, After all, the manifestation of the bad behavior always has a cause. It is our job to find out. This can sometimes mean that we as parents have to relax the rules on a temporary basis and try to establish trust through communicating with our child. That might mean a few conversations which are entirely non critical and which do not turn into a lecture session. Once trust and communication are reopened, we can begin to understand where she is coming from and then work together to start rebuilding trust and keeping the lines of communication open. Sometimes in order to help child behavior problems such as yelling and slamming doors, we might have to take a step back and work at trying to find the reason for that behavior. Usually, when kids start yelling, they do not know what else to do. I know of one case where a young girl was getting top grades and was good in sports, But she was doing really badly at math.. This was frequently the subject of arguments between her and her parents. They often argued about it but they should have saved their energy to try and find out what was wrong with the math problem, the teacher or even her classmates. That would have been a much fruitful line to follow. There is usually an underlying cause for most types of behavior. Other parents take a much softer approach, hoping to become their child's friend when they want to help child behavior problems. But these difficulties are usually caused by the fact that the child has had not had enough direction, structure and imposing the limits. What your child really needs is simple, effective parenting.
