Genital warts are common to both sexes, whereas, only pearly penile papules are found in men. This is a frequent confusion on whether they have pearly penile papules or genital warts. The cause of PPP is unclear, whereas genital warts are the result of a virus called Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Being a virus, genital warts are contagious whereas PPP are benign. Visually there are a number of ways to differentiate between the two, pearly penile papules vs. genital warts. First, PPP is often seen as a ring or halo, or as separate entities around the glans along the shaft. They often have almost a whitehead-like appearance. A red ring base is sometimes apparent depending on the exact anatomical location. They have a raised contour and the covering epidermis is smooth and intact. PPP provide no adverse sensation. On the other hand, genital warts can be prevalent along the shaft, on the head, or anywhere in the genital region. Their appearance is usually flesh-toned or having a darker or reddish colour. Genital warts are also raised but their contour can be more irregular. They can also be single, but usually clump together to form a cauliflower appearance. Like PPP, genital warts exist without any adverse sensation, unless they are traumatized and begin to bleed. When trying to decide between pearly penile papules vs. genital warts, it's very important to make the correct diagnosis. If any doubt, contact a doctor to prevent the possibility of infecting others with HPV. This virus is considered a STD and certain precautions should be practiced, namely informing your sexual partner. The virus may reside in the body without any noticeable effects for a number of years. When it does manifest itself in males, it's in the form of genital warts. In females it can show as warts or even far more serious cervical cancer. Women can get a test for the virus whereas one has not been developed yet for men. As for the clinical treatment of pearly penile papules vs. genital warts, recommendations are somewhat the same. Like PPP, genital warts should not be squeezed or lanced and both could disappear on their own in time. It is important to remember that by touching genital warts, the virus could be transmitted through hand contact. However, unlike PPP being a benign condition, genital warts trigger the body's immune system in an effort to control the virus.
