Introduction to Online Dating For years dating and match making has been around in one way or another from traditional dating agencies where match makers used catalogues and paper profiles with photographs attached endeavoured to match people together, In the 1980’s with the arrival of home videos the new phenomenon of video dating arrived which meant that potential dates could now see and hear the prospects in a video. Dating online is not new; it is however a business that’s changing and evolving with new players and technology’s changing the way the game is played. Since the late 1990’s when the internet started to take off in a big way online dating has always been at the forefront and grown alongside the internet and with the arrival of smart phones online dating will no doubt be prevalent on these fantastic hand held devices. People who are new to online dating and even new to the internet may find it a daunting task to get themselves on to a dating site and may worry about choosing the right site, making a nice profile and even taking and uploading a picture to their profile. There are many different online dating websites some are free and many others charge a subscription fee or a one off payment in our opinion paid for websites are in general better quality and offer a better service than free ones as they usually have a manual profile approval system which means that a person working for the website checks the profile before posting to the website meaning that it is more difficult for scammers to register on the site meaning that you will likely have a better online dating experience. Free websites have one obvious advantage that it will cost you nothing so if you choose this option do your research and find which one is good for you. Do your research and compare different dating websites as services and prices vary, maybe look out for special offers like first 7 days free so you can try it out. When choosing the best site think about who or what type of relationship you are looking for as there are many niche sites that cater for particular groups such as Muslim, Lesbian or vegetarian and some sites specialise in short term casual introductions or long term relationships and or marriage that can be local, national or even international if you want a long distance relationship. After you have chosen your website that you wish to join you will have to create a profile and include a profile picture, make sure that you complete the profile and fill out all sections in an open and honest way and always describe you and do not fall into the trap of describing yourself who you think other may want to date. Make sure that you use an up to date good quality picture, if you do not have one ask a friend or family member to take one for you. Once your profile is approved you are ready to contact potential dates by either sending them an email within the site or expressing interest by using a Nudge or flirt button on their profile (This can vary from site to site but most have a similar feature) When contacting via email don’t be tempted to use a template letter that you send to all potential dates as this scatter gun approach will waste your time with unnecessary correspondence in return. The best practice is to shortlist profiles you like by adding them to your favourites and then study each profile carefully. As a result you should have a few profiles you like the most so send each one a short but personal message. People often receive lots of templates letters from others so try to be different. Send a unique email to each date to show your interested then they will know you have read their profile and you are genuinely interested. When you receive the reply read it through very carefully in the majority of cases you will be able to tell straight away if the person has used a template letter to reply as usually any direct questions will have been ignored. If the date has answered all questions from your previous email they will have taken the time to read and understand and are more likely to be genuinely interested. If you don’t get an email response straight away be patient as there can be delays due to peoples work commitments or shift patterns and not everyone has access to the internet at work. Always remember to stay safe online and do not give any bank details or credit card details to any one you are unsure of and never send money to anyone that you have not meet.
