In most cases step one of the process is generally known as “screening.” During this process the water that enters the plant is surveyed for large items such as wood, heavy rocks, and dead animals. These elements are then removed from the water by hand or by machines. The next phase of the process is generally known as pumping. This part of the process involves the wastewater being transferred through the sewer system to a water plant. This process generally works based on gravity. Once the water makes it to the plan it is pumped into what are known as aeration tanks. Once again gravity takes over and will move the water along throughout the rest of the water treatment process. Once in the aeration tanks the sewage is shaken up. This allows oxygen to enter the water. This will also cause gases to dissolve. During this process the water is filtered and small particles are removed from the water. This process generally makes use of two tanks which pump additional oxygen into the water. At the next phase the organic matter that has been broken down will settle and is removed from the water and is placed into tanks known as digesters. These digesters literally break this material down through a heating process. At this point lighter materials that have floated to the top of the water will then be removed. Finally the water will enter another tank that generally has a chlorine agent in the water that is designed to kill bacteria. This is one of the most important steps in the process. Other chemicals are also added to the water to purify it before releasing it into a nearby creek or river. This is the way that a general water wastewater management strategy works in a water plant.
