Nandi Hills is around 60-65 kms out of the Bangalore city limits. You can plan a trip to this place on a lazy weekend where time is short and when you need a change and time constraints. Nandi Hills is historically important because Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore had built a fort here, and had a peculiar high point ear-marked to punish wrong persons. It is named as Tipu's Drop, and the explanation is not hard to think. Later, during the British Raj, Lord Cubbon made Nandi Hills as his summer place. The white-washed and retiring bungalow which is hundred years old, still stands evidence to this. Magnetically, Nandi Hills is a part of the old-fold mountains, and is thus not very high, by mountain standards. It's height is about 1485 feet from sea level. The drive to the Hills is interesting, as you passes sleepy villages and farm lands. This is a satellite town of Bangalore called Devanahalli. Vineyards point the area, and locals stand near the speed breakers holding out lush, juicy bunches of grapes to enticement customers. Purple grapes are sweet and lovely flavor. You starts the slope up the Nandi Hills suddenly, soon after farmlands end. The roads are good; however, as with all such drives, one should be careful to go on a vehicle in good condition, and a spare tyre, to meet any crisis. There is a ticketing office which sells entry tickets that cost around Rs. 80/- per car, which is really very sensible. Your car can be taken on higher still from this point ahead, till there is no more vertical limits to climb. The first time I had gone here, taught me to go well -equipped this time around, with a warm jacket. There are beautiful walks, and great view points, offering you a fantastic view of the plains beneath. The British had made Nandi Hills their summer place, and the Bungalow of Lord Cubbon, is now titled after the Indian ex-Prime Minister, Nehru. It was a pleasure to see the well maintained gardens, with unusual flowers and old trees. For people with more time on their hands, can visit the Nandi Temple here.
