Lots of people ask about over the counter ADHD meds because they have problems with their insurance or they simply cannot afford the standard medications. Well, as most of the ADHD meds are made from controlled substances such as methylphenidate which is derived form amphetamine salts, you can understand why they are prescription only meds. Legally, there should be no meds available without a prescription as it is a felony. College students who buy Adderall tablets to help them study all night are obviously unaware of the risks of ending up with a forty year prison sentence. At least that is the situation in Virginia. Of course, the equivalent of over the counter meds are available on the Internet and I still do not understand how these companies operate. Again, there is the risk of taking medication without a doctor’s prescription. But these sites state very clearly that no doctor’s prescription is necessary. It is obvious that any ADHD patient should avoid these sites like the plague. You can read on the ADHD forums that there are people who make rather strange recommendations about over the counter ADHD meds or at least what they consider to be the legal equivalent. You can always take ephedra diet pills and use them together with aspirin and caffeine. This is not recommended as the body temperature rises and while that might be alright for weight loss, it could lead to a heatstroke in a hotter climate. It is called the ECA stack (ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin). Other people recommend taking Sudafed along with aspirin. Dr. Daniel Amen, the world expert on ADHD has warned about talking caffeine as, in his opinion, this can actually decrease the supply of blood to the brain so it is not ideal for ADHD patients at all. He has stated this in his book which is called ‘Healing ADHD’. So, let us look at how to make safer and healthier choices. The first thing is that many people really do find that exercise actually helps. This is extensively covered in Dr. Ratey’s book called ‘Spark ‘. There are countless studies that show that children with ADHD are noticeably calmer, better behaved and generally more focused after they have been doing exercise in the open air. I know lots of people who benefit from taking Omega 3 supplements as these are important for helping the brain transmitters work better. Then there are other healthier nutrients we can build into our diet. These should be more protein at breakfast, a zinc supplement and also as much organic fruit and vegetables as we can mange or afford! There is no doubt at all that highly processed foods add unnecessary toxins and we can easily feel better and more focused by avoiding these. Even if we do not have ADHD these are the safest and healthiest choices we can make. These are also the first options when we decide not to have any truck with over the counter ADHD meds . Homeopathic and herbal remedies are usually a much safer option. You can find more information about these on my website.
