6 Attractions To See in Pontianak, Indonesia

Travel & Tourism
Pontianak, Indonesia is often a gateway for tourists who wish to travel Borneo’s deeper territories. Regardless, a holiday in Pontianak can be quite promising as the city holds its own set of amusements equally as engaging as its neighboring destinations.

Pontianak is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan. Located on the island of Borneo, the industrial city is the closest metropolis situated on the equator and thus also regarded as Kota Khatulistiwa or Equator City.

Tugu Khatulistiwa (Equatorial Obelisk)

What began as a simple marker in 1928 has grown into Pontianak’s iconic landmark. Standing tall along the highway, the structure attracts most visitors not just because of its unique architecture. Every equinox, tourists flock the site to witness an extraordinary phenomenon of shadowless sunlight.

Kebun Binatang Pontianak (Pontianak Zoo)

Along Jalan Adi Sucipto is Kebun Binatang Pontianak, a reconditioned zoo housing a variety of different animals from the jungles of Borneo and other locales in the country. Its orangutans are just some of its most renowned displays.

Saham Longhouse

Showcasing traditional Dayak homes and architecture is the Saham Longhouse. Surviving over 200 years of history, this particular home is one of the locale’s oldest and longest dwellings.

Mesjid Abdurrahman

Located just beside Sungai Kapuas Kecil is the 18-century mosque which used to be the personal house of worship of the Sultan of Pontianak, Syarif Abdul Rahman. It prominently features Sumatran architecture with a wooden square-tiered roof, and intricate and remarkable interiors.

Museum Negeri Pontianak

Take a deeper look into the city’s culture by visiting the local museum found south of Pontianak's center. It showcases Dayak tribal artifacts and earthenware jars called ‘tempayan’, as well as several other valuable pieces dating back to the 16th century.

Kalbar Fantasia Theme Park

A terrific place offering a fun-filled day to every type of tourist is the Kalbar Fantasia Theme Park. Featuring a number of thrilling rides and leisurely diversions, the complex promises nothing but exciting adventures for families and groups. Some of its rides include the Stasiun Fantasy Train, Convoy Train, Battery Car, and Kiddy Wheel. There’s also a lazy pool, swimming pool, and a water slide tower. With recreational pursuits all around, its activities are certainly a must in anyone’s list of things to do in Pontianak.

If you happen to drop by the city, a visit to Gardenia Resort and Spa may also be worth a try. The resort in Pontianak presents rejuvenating retreats amid the bustle of the colorful city, and it even offers promos for families and couples as well for a more delightful visit. Those looking forward to a charming, value-laden holiday in Pontianak will surely enjoy a stay here.
