Top Attractions to Visit in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Travel & Tourism
Next to Bali, Yogyakarta is highly regarded as Indonesia's most renowned tourist destination. Brimming with must see Yogyakarta landmarks and amusements, the city is the center of magnificence in terms of classical Javanese fine arts, history, and culture. If you're traveling to this grand Indonesian metropolis, be sure to maximize your stay, take in the sights, and appreciate Javanese heritage as it should be remembered, starting with these attractions:

Kraton Complex

The Kraton Complex is also known as the Sri Sultan's palace. Embracing the royal grounds are residential areas and other structures housing some of the sultan's most treasured possessions. The property includes the Main Court, exhibiting the splendor of the monarchy; the Residence, showcasing the breadth of the royal's lifestyle; The Sultan's Carriage Museum; the Siti Hinggil Selatan, where you can catch a mesmerizing shadow puppet performance; and the Masjid Gede Kauman, one of the oldest mosque's in Yogyakarta.

The Museum Affandi

Named after one of Indonesia's most iconic painters and built around his former house, the museum includes about thirty of Affandi's most prized paintings.

Museum Dirgantara

Known as the aircraft museum, this complex holds antique airplanes dating back to the WWII era. These include the Badger bomber, MIG-15 to MIG-21, Catalina flying boat, Lavochkin LA-11, and Auster MkII.

Museum Sonobudoyo

A visit to this museum offers yet another glimpse into Javanese artistry. Its exhibits include wayang puppets, masks, statues, weapons, and several other trinkets crafted with incredible genius. Another museum displaying intricately designed pieces is the Museum Kekayon, home to a number of wayang puppet showcases and scenic Javanese garden.

Candi Temples

The Javanese belief in a higher power is strongly illustrated in landmarks sprawling across the metro. The most notable of these are the Candi Temples, ancient structures that date back around the 7th to 9th century prominently dedicated to the Buddhist and Hindu faiths. The closest among these in Yogyakarta is Candi Sambisari, a temple built 6 m below the ground. There is also the Candi Kalasan, around 14 km to the east of the city and the oldest Buddhist temple constructed around the late 7th century.

Imogiri

A solemn yet awe-inspiring journey awaits you at the Imogiri grounds. Definitely a unique destination, the site is known as the final resting place of the Yogyakarta and Surakarta royal families.

Being the pulsating heart of Javanese heritage and ancestry, Yogyakarta attracts hundreds of tourists and leisure travelers every year. Yet despite its popularity, amazing deals from hotels in Yogyakarta are always available. Just like Grand Quality Hotel Yogyakarta at the edge of town, which often feature accommodation packages for weekenders. The property is also worth a visit for a refreshing retreat that's close to Yogyakarta's must-see attractions.
