If you have trouble in sleeping at night, there may be many reasons for this as it is a rather complex issue. Some people are at their computer right up to the time they retire. This is not a good idea as the light from the very bright computer screen tricks the mind into thinking it is daytime. It interferes with our wake sleep cycle. Sometimes people eat too late and have problems in digesting which disturbs their sleep patterns. If you are not lactose intolerant one technique is a very simple one and that is to have a glass of warm milk just before you retire. There is a sound chemical reason for this in that the milk contains tryptophan. This can help to get your melatonin going which is essential if you are to get a good night's sleep. In fact there are also melatonin supplements but there is not enough research to show whether this might be damaging in the long term. It would be wise to have a break every six months, if you find that these help. You can alternate this with valerian and or chamomile tea. These are certainly worth trying if you are having trouble sleeping at night. The second method is to try a visualisation technique. You can start thinking intensively about a place you would like to be where you would feel totally relaxed. You then start to fill in details in your mind so that there is a picture of the places, vegetation, sights, sounds, smells and anything else which gives you pleasure. It is the perfect place so anything you like goes in there but anything negative is kept out. The third technique I use when I can't sleep at night is to try breathing deeply through my nose. What I do is when I breathe in though my nostrils, I try to let my stomach and diaphragm swell up with the breath. I also like to think that I am filling my whole body with healing, light, relaxation and serenity. These are the words that keep going round in my mind. As I let the breath out, I like to think that I am really throwing out all the anxiety, stress, worries, negative thoughts and so on. The secret is to breathe very slowly. Try this technique as it can really work if you do it correctly. If you have trouble sleeping at night, you may like to try a herbal remedy to keep you calmer during the day. These herbs can really help you to balance your mood, promote positive and optimistic thoughts and also to soothe away tensions and stress. Once you start using this kind of remedy, you will find that you are less stressed out or tense and that can really help you to get a good night's sleep. Getting off to sleep when you are having trouble sleeping at night creates even more anxiety and stress. The key is to try a few techniques which I have suggested above and also using natural depression treatment during the day. Robert Winterson has written on mental health for many years.
