Proven Technique to Remove That Sticky Chewing Gum in Your Carpet

Home Improvement,Fashion & Cosmetics,Family & Parenting
Gum on a carpet can leave an ugly blemish on the carpet surface. A small spot of chewing gum can make your beautiful carpet ugly in no time. Since its surface is sticky, every time you accidentally put your feet on it, it irritates you. Moreover, it sticks to the fabric of the carpet so badly, that getting gum out of carpet seems to be an impossible task. The biggest concern is that the cleaning technique should not cause any harm to the carpet. For this reason, people look for how to get gum out of carpet without causing any damage to it.

How to Get Chewing Gum Out of Carpet

The moment you discover a chewing gum stain on carpet surface, the first thing that you should do is to try to scrape out the gum as much as possible. You can use your fingers or a spoon to remove gum from carpet. There are a few simple methods that can really help you to take gum out of carpet. They are as follows:

Method #1 A characteristic of chewing gum is that it tends to harden up when it is exposed to cold. Therefore an effective way of chewing gum removal is freezing the carpet. No, you do not have to put the entire carpet inside the freezer! Take a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and place it over the affected area for some time. Touch the area with your hand if you find that it is hard, then take a spatula to remove the gum. While doing so, you will find that the gum crumbles down to small pieces. To remove all these loose debris, vacuum clean the carpet once with a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment.

Method #2 You can apply heat to the gum stain with the help of a hair dryer. Bring the hair dryer close to the affected spot and blow heat upon it in order to melt the gum. When you see that the gum has melted, place a plastic bag upon it so that the gum sticks to it. Then pull the plastic in upward direction and the melted goop will come out of the carpet. Thus a large amount of gum can be extracted with the help of this process. However, it is not suitable for carpets made of synthetic fiber as the heat can melt the carpet fiber too. This technique is good only if the area of the gum stain is small.

Method #3 You can prepare a homemade carpet cleaner with the help of 3 tablespoons baking soda, half tablespoon lemon oil and 8 - 10 drops good quality dish washing detergent. Put all these ingredients in a small bowl and stir well so that they blend well with each other. Apply this thick paste on the affected spot generously and keep it untouched for the next half an hour. Then start scraping the upper layer of the gum with the edge of a key. You will find that the gum is falling apart. Then wipe off the area with rags. This is an effective method of gum removal that show results almost instantly.

Method #4 Sometimes, people are interested to know how to get gum out of carpet using a commercial carpet stain remover. These products are capable of removing many different types of carpet stains. Read the instructions given on the label of the product and then use it for carpet stain removal. Perform a patch test in one hidden corner of the carpet before using it on the main area. Spray a small amount of the stain cleaner on the gum and then scrub it repeatedly with a spatula to remove the gum balls, do not allow these removers to stay on the carpet for long as they can damage the fibers. You should use it as a last resort when other methods of gum stain removal fail to yield results.

Method #5 You can also avail the option of steam cleaning of carpet. Here, a cleaning solution and a jet of hot water is applied to the carpet which penetrates deep into the fabric and the gum residues are extracted with the help of a vacuum suction system fitted to the machine. If you have a carpet steam cleaner in your home, you can do the job on your own. Or else, you have to hire a professional for carpet cleaning. In that case, it is going to be an expensive affair.

Now, you know how to get gum out of carpet safely. This is a tricky job that requires persistent efforts. You should act patiently. If there is a large amount of gum, then no home treatment will be able to clean it up completely in one go. It requires a number of applications. You may have to try out a number of methods given in this article before you successfully get rid of the gum stains.
