Enjoy Pierogi and Other Polish Food

Food & Beverages
The pierogi that is served in Poland is similar to the wonton or potsticker served in China. They are also similar to a ravioli in Italy or a Jewish knish or kreplach. You can also find similar foods in the Ukrane and Russia as the varenyky and piroshki. The dough used to make a pierogi is a water-flour-egg combination. You can also incorporate cream cheese, sour cream and potatoes. You can make a pierogi egg free and dairy free if you want to. The filling of a pierogi can be made with or without meat. A pierogi can be savory or sweet.

Roll the pierogi dough to a thickness of one eighth of an inch. Cut out three inch circles in the dough. Place filling in the center of the dough. Fold over the dough and crimp the edges to seal in the filling. Cook the pierogi by frying, boiling or baking.

Making pierogies are fun and easy. It is a food that you can make with your kids. They can be made ahead of time and frozen and cooked another day. Homemade pierogies are more delicious than those that you buy in a package in the store.

When it comes to filling a pierogi or other Polish food recipes you can really go wrong. Traditional fillings are mushrooms and sauerkraut. But if you want something sweet you can use berries and powdered sugar. Sour cream and caramelized onions can make a savory pierogy. Traditionally you fry pierogies in butter and onions after boiling. They are stuffed with ground meats, fruits, cheese, potato, or sauerkraut. While the traditional shape is a half circle they are also made in triangles or rectangles as well.

The pierogi Polish food recipes are similar to a dumpling. But there are also similarities to the tortelloni, culugione, tortellini, raviolo, bierrock and maultaschen. But that is not all you can find similarities as well to the chuchvara, khinkali and manti from Central Asia. In fact, the pierogi may not be original to Poland.

There are cookbooks dated to this time where you can find original Polish food recipes. In fact every holiday had a version of a pierogi associated with it. You can find the basic pierogi in Poland as far back as the thirteenth century. But it was not until the seventeenth century that the name pierogi was associated with the food.

Pierogies are worth the effort to make. They will give you an insight to the culture of food in Poland. You can enjoy a pierogi or other Polish food recipes in a restaurant but you can make them at home as well. A pierogi is a cheap and simple food item to make. While you can find pierogies in the grocery store you can easily make delicious ones at home. Different fillings and shapes are used for Easter versus Christmas in pierogi recipes. Large pierogies were made for weddings. These were usually filled with chicken and also called kurniki. You can even find Polish food recipes that call for baking the food. Today many of these traditions are no longer followed. For any further info on Polish food recipes or pierogi click on the links.
