Parents giving baby up for adoption are faced with a multitude of choices and options to consider. The potential adoptive parents waiting for a baby of their own may have to overcome many obstacles before the adoption process is complete. International adoptions may face the greatest challenges of all. Different countries have different laws for parents giving baby up for adoption internationally. The laws can be extremely diverse from one country to the next. One of the main things to consider is if the country is part of the Hague Adoption Convention agreement. China is part of the Hague Adoption Convention so all adoptions between China and the US must meet the Hague Adoption Convention requirements. Before giving baby up for adoption internationally, the government of China will ensure that the potential family is married. Single parent adoption is prohibited, with the exception of a single female adopting special needs child. The marriage must be one man and one woman as same sex marriages will make that couple illegible. The potential parents must have been married for at least two years with no more than two divorces in each background. If either person in the marriage has a previous divorce, then the marriage requirement becomes 5 years for eligibility. Both potential parents must be between the ages of 30 and 55 and must have a proven equivalent to $10,000 annually per family member, including the potential adoptive child. This income must exclude government subsidies and government supports. The potential adoptive family must have total value of assets of at least $80,000 and both parents must have graduated from high school or equivalent. Before the Chinese government will consider adoption to an international couple, the couple must be free of a series of health issues. They must not have any aliments such as AIDS, blindness in either eye, severe facial deformities, any non-functioning limbs, any major organ transplants or any mental disabilities or disorders. Being physically and mentally fit is also a requirement and the potential parents cannot have a Body Mass Index of over 40. Couples that are not able to meet a requirement listed may not be able to adopt a child from China. However, this is only one example of rules and regulations on international adoption. Cases can be reviewed on an individual basis if eligibility is not met. Also, it is important to remember that every country has its own set of requirements. Another country that is has parents giving baby up for adoption may better suit a couples needs. Adoption is a journey filled with emotional highs and lows. In the end, once the journey is over, the united family is able to sit back with memories of the experience and a family of their own to raise and enjoy.
