Kaneka (Osaka) says it has entered into an agreement with Meghmani Organics (Ahmedabad, India) and Mitsui & Co. (Tokyo) for forming a new joint venture to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of a chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) production facility at Dahej, in the state of Gujarat, India. Kaneka will have 41% stake in the new jv company dubbed Trience Speciality Chemicals, and Meghmani will have 39% stake, and Mitsui & Co. will hold the remaining 20%. The plant is expected to start production in 2014 and will have a production capacity of 20,000 m.t./year of CPVC. The capacity of the plant will be increased later. The total investment in the project will be about $120 million, Kaneka says. The project aims to accelerate development of the CPVC business in India. CPVC is used as the raw material for hot water pipes, fire sprinkler pipes, industrial pipes and the demand for it has been growing globally, Kaneka says. And in India galvanized iron pipes have been replaced by CPVC pipes, and this trend has been accelerating in recent years, Kaneka says. To seize this market opportunity, Kaneka India was established in 2010 and the company has been planning to build a CPVC plant in India, Kaneka says. Kaneka has CPVC plants both in Japan and in the U.S. at the Kaneka Texas Corp. site in the Bay Port Industrial Complex. Kaneka currently has total CPVC production capacity of 46,000 m.t./year. Meghmani is a manufacturer of agchems, pigments and other specialty chemical products. Meghmani operates an electrolysis plant at Dahej, and chlorine produced by Meghmani will be procured by the new jv company for its CPVC production. Mitsui & Co. has been developing a CPVC business globally together with Kaneka and has been planning to establish a CPVC manufacturing project in India.
