New York Divorce Records were created in the 19th century because of the rapid growth of divorce cases. If you choose to make your request through the internet or through the telephone, an additional fee of $7.25 is added to the standard fee because these requests are handled by commercial record keepers. A major credit card is also required. Requests with priority handling saves more time than those with regular handling. Priority handling cuts the time of processing the records, making the 6-8 week processing period into a 2-4week processing period. Requests made through the phone or the internet takes the shortest time to process, with just between 5-10 working days processing period. All applications must be submitted with recent identifications and a valid reason for requesting for such records. Identification includes driver's license, passport, US Military issued ID's, State issued non-driver photo-ID, proof of billing and any letter or notice from any government agency within the past 6 months. The incapacity to include any of the requirements will prevent the request from being accepted or approved. The public is given the freedom to view and access divorce records since they fall under the category as a "public record".
