When finishing off your GCSE’s, there are difficult decisions to make about where to go next. Should you try and find employment straight away, or stay on at school or college to get A levels before going to University or work? As this decision could have a huge impact on your future, both in terms of potential salary and future happiness it is not something that should be taken lightly. Whilst the temptation may be there to enter full time employment over continuing your education, there is a happy medium where you can receive many of the benefits of full time employment whilst continuing your education in the areas that specifically interest you, called apprenticeships. So if you are considering leaving full time education here are five reasons why an apprenticeship might just be your stepping stone to the career you really want. 1) You'll earn a salary throughout your apprenticeship. Apprentices currently have to be paid a minimum £2.60 an hour, however many firms are willing to provide the national minimum wage with some offering even more than that. 2) You'll continue to further your education, although unlike school you’ll typically only be in the classroom for one or two days a week with the focus on learning new skills specific to your chosen career. 3) You'll gain valuable on the job experience, with many of your co-workers being willing to pass on the benefit of their experience. This builds up some very useful information to include on your CV. 4) You'll be learning by doing, rather than just sitting in a classroom taking notes, you’ll be putting that information to work and referring to those notes as you actually do what they were about. 5) You'll receive staff benefits. As an apprentice you are entitled to all the benefits your employer is providing your fellow workers, from holiday and sick pay to any other available benefits. So as you can see, by becoming an apprentice you’ll be entitled to many additional benefits that are simply not available to those who directly enter full time employment or continue with full time education. Add to this the huge range of areas you can become an apprentice in, from childcare and beauty to administration, engineering and IT you’re very likely to find an apprenticeship that suits you perfectly.
